There are some classic MMA poses that just need to be memorialized. Derrick Lewis pounding his chest after scoring a knock out is one of them. I’ve made several bobblehead just for fun, without the fighter knowing that I made them, and at the time, I was contemplating making Derricks chest pounding bobblehead in the near future. When I saw Derrick at UFC 241, he was sitting about 3 rows in front of me, larger than life. I didn’t want to bug him during the fights so I waited for an opportunity to introduce myself. In between one of the fights, Derrick stood up, and started signing autographs for the people around him. Needless to say the line got long very quickly, and I felt like this was my chance to take action. So I did what I had done so many times before….I got in the back of the autograph line. When it was my turn, I had my phone ready, and I showed him some photos of some of the bobbleheads that I had made previously. I told him that I would love to start making one of him if he was interested. He was. I got his info and went to work right away.
A couple things to notice about this Derrick Lewis bobblehead….I couldn’t be more proud of how the tattoos came out. Tattoos are much harder than they seem, and we have to recreate them by hand. The tattoos came out as good as I could’ve ever hoped for. Another focal point that I wanted to really stand out was his tongue. I wanted the tongue to look wet, so we painted hem with 2 carts of lacquer. That wasn’t enough, so we ended up painting each tongue with 4 coats! When you hold the bobblehead under the light, the tongue really looks like it’s gonna drip saliva all over you! I love it!
It was really fun making this bobblehead, and I hope that you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for all the support.
